1) Washoku means very versatile ranging from prestigious Sushi to what they call “B-rated gourmet.” Please describe your definition of “Washoku.”

2) Should government improve and publicize “Washoku” to increase the number of foreigners? If so, what should the government and ordinary citizens do?

3) Umami, or savory taste, is one of the five basic tastes (together with sweetness, sourness, bitterness, and saltiness), which has been formally recognized internationally. How Umami has contributed to sophisticated “Washoku”.

4) You yourself cook “Washoku”? If you cook, “Washoku” is hard to make compared to Western dishes?

Agenda: How should the Japanese look back on the past and make a good relationship with other countries concerning post-WW2 settlements.

Q1) It takes almost 70 years that a U.S. sitting president makes a visit to Hiroshima and a Japanese present PM goes to Pearl Harbor. What reasons make it so long? Do you think whether or not Japanese people have already conciliated with American people and neighboring countries?

Q2) Some people say that the post war settlement of WW2 was conducted by the “Victor's Rule” based on for the sake of expediency by two superpowers. How does this fact affect on the present mindset among Japanese people?

Q3) Should Japan go together well with the U.S.A. as it has been until today?

Q4) This article has argued that Japan or Abe administration should make more efforts to reconcile with neighboring countries, especially China and South Korea. Do you think this opinion is right or not?

まずはTopic1について軽くおしゃべり。
「和食」が、無形世界遺産として登録されましたね。
さて、「和食」の範囲はいったいどこからどこまで…？
精進料理みたいなものから、洋食まで。
どうも人によって範囲が結構違いそうです。

10分程の休憩の後は全員でひとつのテーブルを囲んでフォーマル？にディスカッション。
今回のトピックは、第二次世界大戦の戦後処理をどう振り返るか、そしてどう他国と良い関係を築くか。。

かなりシリアスかつちょっととっつきづらい感はありますが、こういうトピックこそ、お昼間会の醍醐味！！

現役米国大統領が広島を訪れ、日本の総理大臣が真珠湾を訪れるまでに70年。
この70年を長いと見るか、短いと見るかで、参加者のスタンスの違いがなんとなく見えましたね。
日米関係は複雑で、米国に対する恨みつらみもないではないですが、憧れもあったり、戦後の日本の繁栄（ピークは過ぎたみたいですが…）も、米国の「おかげ」という部分もあり。。
今の日本人が、30年後、50年後、100年後の日本人が、どういう考えを持って米国に限らず他国と外交していくんでしょうねぇ。

フージャーズのディスカッションは、単に「英語で話す」だけでなく、テーブルを囲んだ参加者全員で、よりよい理解や結論にたどり着く為に議論を深めていきたいと考えています。
