いつもの大阪駅前第ニビルの会議室で、18時開始の通常例会。

TOPIC 2 Head Transplant
TITLE: What should we think about head transplant scientifically and ethically?

Q1. Italian neuroscientist announced his plans to perform the first human
head transplant in 2017.
What impression do you have for head transplant? What are the differences
from normal organ transplant?

Q2. Russian man suffers from Werdnig-Hoffmann Disease is thinking about
head transplant is the only way to treat himself.
What are merits and demerits to perform head transplant?

Q3. Critics said the scientists should be charged with murder if the patient dies.
Do you agree with this criticism or not?

Q4. Italian bioethicists argue that because of the uncertainty of the operation,
such a procedure would take away vital donor organs that could have been used
for someone else who needed a heart or a liver transplant to save their lives.
Which is the efficient use of braine-dead patient's body to perform head transplant
or normal organ transplant?

Q5. If the patients were to reproduce with his new body, his children would not
have his genetic makeup but that of the donor’s. What kind of rights, then,
might the donor’s family have to the offspring?

前半のトピックはリオオリンピック。
吉田選手の銀とか、卓球の愛ちゃんの（オリンピック直後の）結婚とか、
ホットな話題が沢山ありましたね。

短い休憩の後は、全員でひとつのテーブルを囲みちょっとフォーマルにディスカッション。
今回のトピックは頭部（というより首から下の身体）の移植。

今回紹介された記事は、衝撃の内容ですね。。
ウェルドニッヒ・ホフマン病という、ざっくり言うと、脳は正常だけど身体が動かなくなる病気の患者のロシア人（の頭部）に、脳死状態の別人の首から下を移植する準備が進められ、2017年に実施予定とのこと…。

臓器移植は、身近が起こった経験を持つ人は少ないかもしれませんが、社会的には浸透してきています。が、首から下まるごととなると、角膜や心臓や腎臓や肝臓とは違った抵抗感を感じます。
技術の進歩は失敗なくして成立せず、というだけに、最初はうまくいかないんだろうなぁ…という心証を持つ人が多いようでした。

臓器提供同様規制やガイドラインはいずれ必要にはなりますが、医療だけでなく、世界で一番最初に行われることに前もって規制を準備するのは実際的にできないことなのではないでしょうか。

論理的にディスカッションをするにはショッキングすぎて、まだ受け止めきれてない人も多そうでした。
少し時間が経ってから、（１例目の手術の結果を見守ってから？）またみんなで話し合ってみたいですね。

フージャーズのディスカッションは、単に「英語で話す」だけでなく、テーブルを囲んだ参加者全員で、よりよい理解や結論にたどり着く為に議論を深めていきたいと考えています。
